Is Social Media a Fad or a Revolution?

I recently gave a presentation to a group of business people that still feel unsure about using social media for business. Unfortunately, this mindset still exists…simply because these people have not been informed of the magnitude and impact of social media.

In the presentation, I stress that social media is here to stay. It is a new way of communicating that we all need to embrace – just like the invention of the telephone. And businesses that are quicker at embracing this new medium will reap the rewards. The channels may be replaced (think MySpace replaced with Facebook) but social media is here to stay.

I also stress how social media can be used for a myriad of business functions, such as…

  • Marketing and attracting new customers
  • Public relations (brand recognition, crisis management, engaging with journalists)
  • Creating customer relationships
  • Ongoing customer service
  • Market Research and Listening tool
  • Integration with offline networking efforts

    Your article is very timely, particularly, given that many organizations and businesses are experiencing budget cuts. The use of social media provides options to small businesses for marketing and positioning their firms.
