Are companies doing it all wrong!!! It seems that when it comes to incentivizing and motivating they are. The video below from Daniel Pink (with RSA animation) confirms what many of us have thought for a long time and what the new emerging economic model is proving. According to an MIT study funded by the Federal Government, we are motivated by…
Autonomy – being self directed
Mastery – getting better at things we like
Purpose – making a contribution to the world
At least this is the case when conceptual and creative thinking skills are required. However, for mechanical skills the current model of monetary rewards for performance worked like a charm.
In general this would suggest that the vast majority of our white collar workers are being compensated wrong. With all this knowledge about what motivates, why are companies still doing it wrong? I would love to hear your theories. Please take a look at the video and let me know what you think.

The results of the study are interesting. It definitely provides great insights to organizations on how to motivate employees depending whether their jobs are mechanical only or if cognitive skills are involved. I think at times organizational leaders tend to focus on monetary rewards as it may appear the least complicated strategy and “quick fix” instead of employing strategies, such as increasing employee autonomy that may require the change in management approach.
I was though wondering if the age of participants was a controlled variable in this study. As some studies had shown monetary motivation for better performance also depends on the employee age. Thus, just a critical thought whether the age of the participants was accounted for as the first part of the study was conducted with MIT students, and I was not clear who were the participants of the study in India…

Thanks for your comment Eivina. Good question on the age of the study participants. Although I don’t have the answer to that, I am sure that we should be studying the younger generation as they are the workforce of the future.
